Linton Kwesi Johnson (aka LKJ) (born 24 August 1952, Chapelton, Jamaica) is a British-based author and dub poet. Johnson's poetry makes clever use of the unstandardised transcription of Jamaican Patois and is allied to the Jamaican "toasting" tradition. Linton Kwesi Johnson was born on 24 August, 1952 in Chapelton, a small town in the rural parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He came to London in 1963, attended Tulse Hill secondary school, and later studied Sociology at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London (graduating in 1973), which currently holds his personal papers in its archives. Linton Kwesi-Johnson can be said to be the most significant Jamaican poet writing in the U.K. because his verse is read and appreciated widely and far beyond the community it is initially grounded in. Yet, for such an influential contemporary voice, Kwesi-Johnson appears to have published little - a mere 5 collections since 1974.
